Targeting this species wasn’t always this popular. When I started intentionally fly fishing for Carp over 20 years ago, there were only a handful of anglers I knew doing it. One of them was Jim Andrix, the person I give most credit, or maybe blame, for feeding this addiction. He was instrumental in my early development, teaching me how to target a fish that seemed almost impossible to catch. Although Jim is no longer with us, it’s impossible to see a tailing carp and not think of all the advice he so freely shared when I was starting out.

Fast forward nearly 25 years and it’s easy to see why these amazing game fish have become so popular. They test you in ways one can only be tested in saltwater, but are far more accessible regardless of where you live! My favorite way to target Carp is by sight fishing, a game where your stealth, keen eyesight and patience are paramount to success. Imagine easing down a slow-moving river looking for signs of feeding Carp. Once spotted, you might only get one shot before the gig is up and they are onto you. If you do everything right and one of these golden torpedoes eat your fly, you still have to fight a 10 to 20 pound fish and do your best to keep it out of cover, often with very light 2X or 3X tippet. These fish run hard, fight harder, and will test anglers of every skill level.

Gear is provided on all guide trips. They are revered by anglers throughout the country as one of the baddest fish that swim in this part of the world. There is absolutely no doubt as to why this fish has gained so much popularity over the years. The visual of a Smallmouth annihilating a big streamer, the ferocity of this fish crushing a deer hair frog or the surgical precision of a big fish coming up to sip a popper off the surface is second to none!! Simply put, the Smallmouth Bass is one of the most sensory stimulating fish we have to target as anglers.

The variety of presentation styles and the “seasons within the season” make it impossible to lose interest in such a diverse and admirable species. For those that want a challenge that is both physical, mental and will test everything you have, this trip is for you. Maybe you feel you want to try and accomplish one of the more difficult tasks in all of fly fishing or if the idea of slamming your head against a wall repeatedly sounds like your idea of fun, then let's go. I am more than happy to provide that wall!!

As the first fly fishing guide for Musky in Ohio, I’ve been targeting Musky with a fly rod for almost 20 years and have developed a strong love/hate relationship with them. One of the best words I can think of to describe this fish is dishonest. Musky do not care how good you think you are, how many places you’ve traveled, or how well tied your fly is. They do not care how perfect your cast was or how good the conditions are, they simply don't care about any of it. You can do everything right, and that still won’t be good enough. Then when you least expect it or after a cast that you think sucks….WHAM!! This is probably why I can’t seem to shake my deep infatuation and unhealthy obsession I have with this fish, especially within its native range. Part of the intrigue is that it's both a physical and mental marathon. You have to keep it together all day long, never knowing when an opportunity will show itself. When it does, you need to have your sh*t together and do everything right to have a chance at hooking and landing one of these incredible animals. No matter how much you learn or think you know, the Musky are always willing to serve up a warm helping of humble pie.

If you are interested in pursuing Musky on the fly for the first time, please consider booking a casting lesson. Here I can prep you on how to cast and manage heavier gear. Other anglers have found it to be incredibly helpful to book a Pike trip first. This serves as a great stepping stone and building block to east your way into the Ultra Marathon of fly fishing.

Gear is provided on all guide trips. These prehistoric predators offer some of the most exciting fishing the state has to offer. Targeting Pike with a fly rod is one of the most visually thrilling ways to pursue this explosive fish. Using 8 to 10 weight rods you’ll be casting 6 to 10 inch flies into log jams that look like dark alleys, along weed lines and ledges, with the constant anticipation that this ambush predator can strike at any moment. The way a pike eats is nothing short of amazing. It’s as if they are trying to inflict maximum damage on the fly. That anticipation, combined with watching an enticingly seductive fly slide through the water, is what keeps you motivated throughout the day between shots at fish. Unlike their larger cousins, the Musky, Pike are an honest fish, if you are doing everything right, you will get your opportunity to tangle with these wolves of the water!

Average fish size ranges from 20 to 28 inches. Once you hit the 30 inch mark you are into a quality, respectable “Fish Ohio” fish that is just built differently. Eclipsing that is the segway into the trophy category of fish. There are people out there that say they catch 36 to 40 inch fish all the time in Ohio and I am here to tell you, as someone that has guided fly fishing trips for Pike longer than anyone else in the state, that is simply not true. We do catch fish over 36 inch every year but not many. That is a true Ohio giant. We have even caught them over 40 inch but that is a very rare and special fish. Because Pike in Ohio are at the southern most point of their native range, they simply do not live long enough to gain the size of their larger cousins farther north. Our fish here live 12 to 15 years in a best case scenario. Most fish live to be 8-10 years old. Compare that to fish on the northern end of their range can be a year old for every inch they are long, once they reach 30”.

Anyone interested in getting into the Predator fly fishing game or has interest in one day catching a Musky, this is a great place to start. I have always thought Pike fishing was the perfect prerequisite to Musky fishing. It will teach you a lot of the same skills required to Musky fish but in a much more manageable arena. It's a great stepping stone into the Musky world. Not quite as demanding, mentally or physically, you will be casting 8 to 10 weight rods instead of 10 to 12 weight rods and flies that are a little easier to cast as well.

Gear is provided on all guide trips.
