Having the opportunity to catch the baddest freshwater predator in North America will leave you with a memory that will last a lifetime. Musky Guide Trip

Musky (Esox Masquinongy Ohioensis) Float Trips

Native to Ohio, the Musky or the fish of 10,000 casts as so often called, simply put, one of the most thrilling and challenging fish to target with a fly rod in the country! For those that want a challenge that is both physical, mental and will test everything you have, this trip is for you. Maybe you feel you want to try and accomplish one of the more difficult tasks in all of fly fishing or if the idea of slamming your head against a wall repeatedly sounds like your idea of fun, then let's go. I am more than happy to provide that wall!!

As the first fly fishing guide for Musky in Ohio, I’ve been targeting Musky with a fly rod for almost 20 years and have developed a strong love/hate relationship with them. One of the best words I can think of to describe this fish is dishonest. Musky do not care how good you think you are, how many places you’ve traveled, or how well tied your fly is. They do not care how perfect your cast was or how good the conditions are, they simply don't care about any of it. You can do everything right, and that still won’t be good enough. Then when you least expect it or after a cast that you think sucks….WHAM!! This is probably why I can’t seem to shake my deep infatuation and unhealthy obsession I have with this fish, especially within its native range. Part of the intrigue is that it's both a physical and mental marathon. You have to keep it together all day long, never knowing when an opportunity will show itself. When it does, you need to have your sh*t together and do everything right to have a chance at hooking and landing one of these incredible animals. No matter how much you learn or think you know, the Musky are always willing to serve up a warm helping of humble pie.

If you are interested in pursuing Musky on the fly for the first time, please consider booking a casting lesson. Here I can prep you on how to cast and manage heavier gear. Other anglers have found it to be incredibly helpful to book a Pike trip first. This serves as a great stepping stone and building block to east your way into the Ultra Marathon of fly fishing.

Gear is provided on all guide trips. If you want to bring your own gear, we can discuss and go over what you have and if it is suitable for what we will be doing. Having gear rigged up the right way is critical to giving you the best chance for success and having an enjoyable time on the water.

Seasons

Fall Season: October - December

The Fall season for Musky can be some of the best fishing of the year. The Fall colors are in full swing and musky are putting on the feed bag to prepare for winter. It is a special time of year to be on the water. I think it is a time of year everyone should experience!

Late Winter/Spring Season: February - June

Late Winter/Spring Season is a great time of year to target large Musky. Our fish are putting the feed bag on hard in preparation for the upcoming spawn. During late winter through the pre-spawn time frame, the rivers have a beautiful turquoise blue green hue. This season is without a doubt one of the most exciting times to target a truly giant pre-spawn female.

Once the spawn is over, usually around April, there is a short window to target the post spawn fish before the heat of summer sets in. This short period is a very enjoyable time of year to target these fish. The weather is generally very pleasant and spring is in the air. If you get the chance to get out on a trip this time of year, I think you will see why it is so special. This time of year offers a great mix of quantity and quality fish. I will stop fishing for musky until the cooler weather of fall comes back.

If you have any questions or would like to talk about which trip is right for you, give me a call or shoot me an email. I’m always happy to help.
